Surrogacy: A New Hope for Childless Couples.

In a significant move, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has directed all insurance companies to include the cost of surrogacy under their health insurance policies. This development is expected to provide a ray of hope for couples who have been struggling with fertility issues and are looking for alternative means to have children.
For those who may be unfamiliar with the concept of surrogacy, it is a medical procedure where a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy for another individual or couple who cannot have a child on their own. With the increasing incidence of infertility, the demand for surrogacy has been on the rise in recent years. However, the high cost of medical treatment involved in the process has been a major deterrent for many couples.
The IRDAI’s directive mandates that all health insurance policies cover medical expenses related to surrogacy, including the surrogate mother’s medical treatment, delivery, and postnatal care. This move is expected to make surrogacy a more affordable and accessible option for couples who wish to become parents through this route.

Speaking on this development, Amit Goel, director and principal officer at Raghnall Insurance Brokers, said that it was important for insurers to recognize the growing demand for surrogacy and fertility treatments. He also added that his firm would strive to ensure that all parties involved in the surrogacy process are safeguarded against any unforeseen medical complications that may arise during the pregnancy and post-partum period.

The inclusion of surrogacy under health insurance policies is undoubtedly a positive step towards providing much-needed relief to couples struggling with fertility issues. It also highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding of surrogacy as a viable option for starting a family. As the world evolves, so must our means of addressing social challenges, and surrogacy is a prime example of this.
